Heritage Tour-Winslow Jr. High
April 19-25, 2008
Day 1 (Click HERE to view pictures!)
The Winslow group left the Alfond Youth Center at 6:00 am and they were on schedule all day long. The kids had a great time on the Mayflower II and at the Plantation itself. The kids asked some great questions and they seemed to enjoy this segment of the trip. They arrived at the Hotel an hour early as the traffic was not bad at all. The kids had some social time before they went to bed to get ready for New York City on Sunday. They will do Battery Park and the Lower East Side before they go to the Lower East Side.

The trip for Winslow is going great. The weather has been fantastic but the schedule has been a little tight as they did Liberty Island in the pm and I didn’t allow enough time for them to get everything in. They will be in Philly on Monday and hopefully the weather will hold up so that they can enjoy the day.
We haven’t received any pictures from Adam S. yet but eventually we will. Hope everyone back in Maine are enjoying their mini vacation as your kids will be home soon.
Day 3 (Click HERE to view pictures!)
We having a great time. The kids have been excellent and the weather, beautiful. They were in Philly in the morning and the Amish Country in the afternoon. They ate in the Amish Country and were treated to fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, applesauce, desert, and drinks. A super meal. Hopefully I will have some pictures for you, but it might be after the kids get home.
Day 4 (Click HERE to view pictures!)
The kids were in Gettysburg in the am and again they were treated to an outstanding tour at the Military Park. The guide (Jim Clouse) was outstanding as usual and he gave everyone a lot of facts and information about the involvement that Maine had in the battle of Gettysburg. They then loaded the bus for Washington, DC where they visited the Holocaust. The leaders and kids were moved with what they saw and some of the pictures were very graphic. The Winslow students have an advantage over my other trips because they study the Holocaust before they go on the Heritage Tour. They had supper and shopped at the Old Post Office Pavilion and in the pm they did the Memorials in DC. They went to the WWII memorial, Lincoln, Viet Nam, and Korean Memorial. Everyone had a great and long day. They will be in DC on Wednesday and then head for New Jersey and New York City. Hope everyone back home enjoyed the beautiful weather.
Day 5 (Click HERE to view pictures!)
We spent our day in DC under a warm, sunny sun. Our day started at the Peterson House (Where Lincoln Died) to get some pictures as Ford’s Theater is closed for repairs. We then went on our separate groups to visit the National Archives, Museum of Natural History, the Air & Space Museum, and the Botanic Gardens. At 5:00 pm they loaded the bus and headed for Hanover, Maryland for Medieval Times. Some of the team leaders from Winslow met some of the team leaders from Messalonskee in the National Mall. The red and yellow jackets made it easy to see each other. Both groups seem to be having a great time. Everyone had a great time at the Dinner & Show and spending some time with their Knight was a real treat. They got back to their Hotel fairly late and on Thursday they will do Arlington in the am before they finish up Dc and head back to New York City. Hope the weather was as good back in Maine as it was in DC.
Day 6 (Click HERE to view pictures!)
The Winslow kids were at Arlington this am to see the “Changing of the Guard” and were treated to an awesome sight. Even though the walk was tough to be able to see JFK’s grave site, Bobby Kennedy’s grave site, The Lee House, and the “Changing of the Guard” was well worth it. They came back into DC to the Air & Space Museum before they headed to New Jersey and their Pizza and Pool Party. The party went well and the kids were in bed fairly early as they will have a 5:00 am wake up call to go to the Big Apple and the Today Show. You can watch them on NBC starting at 7:30 am. Watch for the signs and the Red & Yellow jackets. They should be arriving home on Friday night at 9:00 pm. I’m sure that they will be glad to see everyone even though they had an awesome time.
